PLANNING
A SAFARI
Kenya
offers good game viewing every month of the year though some months
are obviously better than others. When planning your itinerary it
is important to decide your budget and where your interests lie.
The following should help you in your thoughts.
When
going on safari in Kenya undoubtedly the most famous area for people
to visit is the Masai Mara with it’s renown lion population
and being the stage for the northern most point of the Wildebeest
Migration one of natures largest spectaculars. The wildebeest migration
of some 1 million+ animals crosses over into Kenya some time during
July and remains there until November. During these months they
graze and move throughout the reserve. The weather during these
months is also wonderful with warm sunny days and comfortable nights.
A suggested itinerary for those wishing to combine both a safari
seeing the migration and the beach can be seen at the “Taste
of Kenya”. It is worth noting the Masai Mara offers good
game viewing all year round and though it is a bit more special
during the time the migration is around it is still worth including
in all itineraries.
There
are though many other areas to include in a safari itinerary. Amboseli
offering those cliched but none the less still wonderful views across
the border into Tanzania of Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain
in Africa, is well worth while including. Game viewing in Amboseli
can offer some wonderful elephant herds as well as many predators.
Itineraries to Amboseli can range in price and style from “Romance
of Kenya” to “Kenya Escape
”. Apart from April and May when it can be a bit wet Amboseli
does offer some excellent game viewing all year round.
Close
to the slopes of Mt Kenya is the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy where
you can enjoy some excellent game viewing by vehicle or horse back
or camel and on foot. Though it is a private game reserve the area
of land encompassed is so large the game viewing so good and the
variety of wildlife to be seen so wide you will not recognise you
are not in a national park. The itinerary "Kenya
Explored" includes Lewa and is well recommended to you.
In
the north of the country there is the Samburu being more dry and
arid with a very different landscape and though there are similar
wildlife as elsewhere there are those which favour the peculiarities
of the arid landscape. Samburu is can be enjoyed by all but maybe
it would be more appreciated by those who have been on safari before.
A good itinerary which includes the Samburu region is “Classic
Kenya”.
A
couple hours north of Nairobi lies the lakes of Kenya in the Rift
Valley. They are physically very beautiful and offer the opportunity
of relaxing in a wonderful serene environment and at the same time
offer some game viewing and great birding.
Towards
the coast there is the gem of an area, Tsavo National Park, with
some excellent game viewing, normally few people and a real wilderness
experience. It is often overlooked by people but shouldn’t
be offering a variety of topography and a variety of wildlife to
be seen. It is renowned for large herds of elephants as well as
predators and other wildlife. A wonderful place to stay is Galdessa
which offers not only comfortable accommodation but also fine guiding.
The
itineraries we have on the web site are just to give you some idea
